Survival of the fittest isn’t the only way.
Meet the slothiest among sloths, the brown-throated three-toed sloth. Smaller, slower, and strictly herbivorous, it somehow thrives in greater numbers across Panama and Costa Rica than its faster, omnivorous two-toed cousin, the Hoffman sloth.
This piece was born from Joana’s childhood in Panama, where sloths regularly crossed roads, blocking her school bus, as well as her visits to Panamanian sloth rehab centers. Sloth caretakers share that nobody knows definitively why the three-toed sloth is winning at survival. What we do know is whatever it’s doing, it’s working better.
This piece captures how winning isn’t always about overpowering your environment the most, but working within it.
