Staghorn fern balls hang from Miami trees like spiky green chandeliers, thriving without traditional roots.

Instead of pulling nutrients from soil, the fern absorbs them from air, rain, and decomposing matter.

At some point in its evolutionary journey, it pivoted.

When the usual path was blocked, it found another in a stroke of genius of resourcefulness. A true marvel, as captured by the pink halo stripe, this plant reminds us of its quintessential divine design.

This piece took five years to come to fruition. When 2020 stripped the world of the ordinary, and shelves were out of stock of basic items and stretcher frames included, the artist mirrored her subject, she pivoted. Echoing the fern’s resourcefulness, the artist cut imperfect wood beams, drilling and screwing them together piece by piece to form the stretcher frame. Sometimes we have to carve our own path.
